Black History Tube Map

#BlackHistory Last year Transport for London and The Black Cultural Archives teamed up to launch the Black History Tube Map celebrating contributions of black people to the history the UK from pre Tudor times to the present day. The map replaces the tube lines with themes that link people e.g. the arts, trailblazers and stations names are replaced by the names of individuals across a range of professions. A FREE PDF of the map can be downloaded at the link below or an A1 poster can be purchased from the London Transport Museum website or the Black Cultural Archives website.

Robby the robot

#IconicProducts Robby the Robot is a character that first appeared in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet. It quickly became a popular sci-fi icon which inspired many toys and other products over the years. The Robby costume worn in the film was made from metal, wood, rubber, acetate, Perspex and Royalite, an early form of ABS plastic, which was vacuum formed, something that at that time was a new technology.

El Anatsui

#ThinkDo #InspiredBy El Anatsui is a sculptor from Ghana that uses everyday materials to create large scale installations. This piece called 'Ink Splash 2012 II' is made from metal seals from African liquor bottles which are crushed into circles and cut into thin strips and sewn together with copper wire. The finished material has a degree of flexibility and movement because of the way it has been made. This has become one of the signature styles Anatsui's work is known for.
