Hand stitched embellishments onto metal
The inspiration for this artwork is a playful dragonfly garden windmill I used to be able to see when looking out of the kitchen window of the first house with a garden my husband and I bought after years of living in a flat. I loved it’s quirky face and the joy it seemed to express at flying in the wind. When we moved house I filmed the dragonfly, and it’s been on my computer desktop titled ‘Let’s Fly’ ever since. Watching him having fun in the wind reminds me of the joy of simple pleasures and to remember to have fun in life.
In this artwork I wanted to capture the carefree spirit of the dragonfly, along with spirit of New Brighton, where we now live. It’s known for its very windy beachfront, and I can imagine my dragonfly windmill would have been very happy! The embellishments on each section of windmill give a nod to seaside traditions such as shells, beach balls, and ice creams, and the use of metal and plastic materials reflect my interest in hand stitching onto unusual materials.
The windmill is mounted onto black mounting board inside a deep shadow box frame (with glass window).
The frame measures approximately 27cm x 27m (depth 6cm) wide
The frame can be hung or stood on a surface using either the arm on the back of the frame or by standing the frame on its edge.
