‘Terrarium’ is a sculpture that draws inspiration from the Victorian tradition for creating miniature landscapes and decorative displays housed inside glass domes. These ornamental arrangements were popular in Victorian homes, serving as decor and as conversation pieces that reflected wealth and social status. Hanging inside the terrarium is a tea strainer decorated with hand embroidery, beads, buttons and paper and fabric flowers. The choice of a tea strainer as the base for the design reflects the popularisation in the Victorian era of fine metal mesh tea strainers because of the increased use of smaller leaf teas. The highly embellished surface of the strainer also reflects the Victorian fascination with exotic plants and floral patterns and the trend for highly ornate and eclectic design.
This embroidery is completely hand made and has taken over 30 hours to make.
The product is delicate and can't be washed and is for decorative purposes only.
